Photo Rag Metallic paper: light and reflections in my prints

Why I choose Photo Rag Metallic paper

The choice of paper plays a vital role in my artistic process. For certain works in my ‘Imaginary Planets’ series, I have chosen Hahnemühle Photo Rag Metallic, a fine art paper whose subtly metallic finish reveals the play of light, enhances the contrasts and lends a distinctive depth to my photographic creations.

Photo Rag Metallic paper: a subtle sheen for a striking effect

Hahnemühle’s Photo Rag Metallic is a 340 g/m² 100 per cent cotton fine art paper, natural white in colour and free from optical brighteners. Its surface has a glossy finish with a silvery metallic effect. In my photographs, this finish complements the reflections, contrasts and play of light.

Photographs printed on this paper take on a dynamic quality thanks to its metallic surface, whilst retaining a softness and sharpness of detail that bring out every nuance of colour. The metallic effect works particularly well for monochrome or black-and-white works, but it is also incredibly effective for photographs with vivid, high-contrast colours.

More pronounced details, accentuated contrasts

One of the great strengths of Hahnemühle Photo Rag Metallic paper lies in its ability to bring out detail and accentuate contrasts. Thanks to its slightly glossy finish, prints benefit from increased depth, where every shadow, every line and every texture seems to come to life. This paper is an ideal choice for images where fine details, such as complex landscapes or architectural scenes, need to be highlighted. Light seems to interact with the print, accentuating the subtleties of shadow and highlight while preserving exceptional sharpness.

For fine art photographers like myself, precision in detail is crucial. ‘Imaginary Planets’, a photographic series with a particular focus on textures and natural elements, benefits from this metallic effect, which adds a dimension of mystery and depth. Photo Rag Metallic paper thus becomes the perfect medium to enhance these already immersive works.

Keep a print on Photo Rag Metallic paper

This paper is acid-free and lignin-free and meets the conservation standards specified by Hahnemühle. The lifespan of the print also depends on the inks, mounting, exposure and storage conditions of the print.

For my limited-edition works, I therefore regard the paper, the print and the presentation as a single entity. I recommend avoiding direct sunlight and handling the print with care.

A versatile paper for a variety of artistic works

Whether you work in contemporary photography, portraiture, landscape or architecture, Hahnemühle Photo Rag Metallic is a versatile choice. It excels in both colour and black-and-white prints. Highlights or metallic reflections, such as water or starry skies, are beautifully enhanced on this paper.

The glossy finish is best viewed under the lighting conditions of the venue where the work will be displayed. Depending on the format and the project, professional framing or mounting will help to showcase the print to its best advantage.

Choosing a suitable medium for the presentation

The choice of medium also depends on its intended use: display in a gallery, a private collection or a home. I favour paper that is suited to the image and storage conditions consistent with the project.

This attention to materials extends my creative work beyond the digital file.

The dialogue with the Z Lab studio on the Pantachrome

As a fine art photographer, I work with trusted partners to print my work. Z Lab presents its Pantachrome print as a fine art print on cotton paper with a metallic finish. Consulting with the printer helps me choose the finish that best complements each image.

When it comes to my prints, consultation with the laboratory allows me to fine-tune the colour rendering, contrasts and presentation. The medium must serve the artistic intention of the image.

Before selecting a finish, I recommend examining a sample or a print, as the metallic effect varies with the light.

In conclusion

Photo Rag Metallic paper lends a distinctive quality to my Imaginary Planets: the reflections and contrasts contribute to the work’s presence. It is an artistic choice to be appreciated in the context of the image, its format and the exhibition venue.
