Artists’ trails in Walloon Brabant: encounters and visiting tips

8 min read

A journey through the art scene in Walloon Brabant is best discovered on foot, by stepping into a studio or chatting in a house open to the public. These encounters are close to my heart because of their intimacy. Here is my perspective as a fine art photographer, along with a few local experiences and some tips to help you prepare for your visit.

Walloon Brabant, a land of artists and creativity

Walloon Brabant has always been a source of inspiration for painters, photographers and sculptors. Its rolling landscapes fuel the imagination of creators. Its villages exude an atmosphere conducive to culture. Every artistic journey through Walloon Brabant reflects this dynamism. It transforms a weekend into a local cultural journey. These events are not rigid institutions. They rely on local residents, artists and passionate volunteers. Each edition showcases the Brabant art scene. These local initiatives give the province a strong cultural identity.

Tourinnes-la-Grosse: a story of journeys and encounters

It was in Tourinnes-la-Grosse that the story of these artists’ journeys began. The Fêtes de la Saint-Martin are now in their 59th year. This event was initiated by the ceramic artist Max van der Linden. Every year, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors. It is not a museum but an artistic event that extends far beyond the purely local sphere. It is a cultural trail through Walloon Brabant that takes in houses, barns, gardens, churches and a number of communal venues. Local residents open their doors to the artists. Visitors can discover paintings, sculptures, ceramics, installations and photographs. A show and an opening concert accompany the programme. Furthermore, the official contemporary art trail of the Fêtes de la Saint-Martin is renowned for its quality and calibre.

The Saint Martin’s Day celebrations were the forerunners of the art trails. They have inspired many other Brabant municipalities.

I had the privilege of exhibiting my Imaginary Planets as an artist at the Fêtes de la Saint-Martin in 2024, 2023 and 2022. In 2025, I am fortunate to be able to exhibit at the studio of the Brabant-based potter Patrick Jadot. I have also continued to contribute to the event as a volunteer and community manager.

Chaumont-Gistoux, an artists’ trail in Walloon Brabant that is close to my heart

In Chaumont-Gistoux, a biennial artists’ trail brings the town and its villages to life: Chaumont, Gistoux, Longueville, Bonlez, Dion-le-Mont, Dion-le-Val, Corroy-le-Grand and Vieusart. It is particularly close to my heart for two reasons. I exhibit my work there and also volunteer as a community manager. I help to promote the work of the artists involved. Painters, photographers, watercolourists, sculptors and ceramicists all take part. Visitors discover studios and homes transformed into pop-up galleries. Every encounter leads to fascinating conversations. This Brabant cultural trail is a fine illustration of the local spirit.

He emphasises creativity and human connection. It is a convivial and enriching experience for everyone.

My experiences with various artists’ journeys in Walloon Brabant

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to exhibit in several towns. I took part in the Fêtes de la Saint-Martin in Tourinnes-la-Grosse. I have shown my work in Grez-Doiceau and Louvain-la-Neuve. Profondsart-Limal, Walhain, Orp-Jauche and Chastre have also hosted me. I have exhibited in Braine-l’Alleud and, of course, in Chaumont-Gistoux.
Every artistic journey in Walloon Brabant offers a different experience. The exchanges with visitors are enriching and sincere. They inspire my photographic work and my ‘Imaginary Planets’.

These local encounters are essential to my artistic practice.
