Buying art online: 10 checks before ordering

4 min read

Buying a work of art online requires a few practical checks: who created it, which print you will receive, how it will be presented and under what conditions it will be delivered to you. As a fine art photographer, I offer you ten points to check to help you prepare your order and ask the right questions before choosing an Imaginary Planet.

1. Identify the artist

Please check the author’s name, background, contact details and the consistency of their work. A series is best appreciated through several images and an explanation of the creative process. For my Imaginary Planets series, please contact me directly if you require any further information.

2. Understanding what is being sold

Printed print, work mounted on a panel, plexiglass finish or framed presentation: you need to know which item will be delivered. Check the format, the medium, the final dimensions and the options. A print on its own cannot be directly compared to a ready-to-hang piece.

3. Check the edition limits

Note the number of copies, the numbering and any artist’s proofs. Ask whether the limitation applies to all formats and media or to a specific edition. A term such as ‘limited edition’ must be accompanied by specific details.

4. Examine the certificate and documents

The certificate of authenticity must correspond to the artwork: title, artist, number, dimensions and finish. Please also retain the receipt. In my offer, the purchase of a print does not include the transfer of reproduction rights for the image; any other use must be discussed separately.

5. View the images with their borders

A screen may alter the perception of colour, brightness and size. Please enquire for further details or clarification regarding the medium if necessary. A contextual image may be a photomontage: it helps the viewer to visualise the work but does not prove that the work has been installed in that location.

6. Check the order summary

Please check the title, size, finish, framing, quantity and delivery address. If anything remains unclear, please ask before confirming. A written exchange makes it easier to refer back to what has been agreed.

7. Understanding the total price and payment

Check the final amount, any charges, the currency and the proposed payment method. Keep the confirmation and the invoice. If an offer or request for payment seems inconsistent, contact the artist using the contact details published on their website.

8. Prepare for delivery

Ask about the estimated delivery time, the protection provided and the delivery arrangements. Upon arrival, check the packaging and the artwork; take photographs if you notice any damage and contact the seller promptly to find out what to do next.

9. Please read the returns policy before purchasing

Please consult the applicable terms and conditions and ask for further details regarding a bespoke order. Rights and exceptions depend on the framework applicable to the sale: do not automatically assume that choosing a particular format or finish means that returns are excluded.

10. Knowing who to address a question to

Before placing an order, make sure you have the contact details for enquiries regarding the order, delivery or any issues that may arise. Precise information about the item and the terms of sale will help ensure a hassle-free purchase. To help you choose the image itself, my article ‘How to choose a fine art photograph’ complements this list.
